Japan, Jordan express ‘deep concerns’ for deteriorating situation in Gaza

DUBAI: Japanese Foreign Minister KAMIKAWA Yoko spoke with Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi about the continuing violence in the Gaza Strip.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Second Global Refugee Forum in Geneva on Wednesday, Kamikawa said Japan was “strongly concerned” about the resumption of the fighting and that the combat has expanded to all areas of the Gaza Strip including the southern areas.

She added that Japan will continue to make utmost diplomatic efforts in order that the Security Council can fulfill its role, and that it is vitally important to prevent further spillover across the region.

Kamikawa said that there is also a deep concern regarding Israeli settler violence in the West Bank.

Japan provided the Emergency Grant Aid worth USD 10 million for Palestine, and is working on the early delivery of an additional USD 65 million of humanitarian assistance. In addition, Kamikawa explained that Japan also provided relief supplies through JICA.

Safadi expressed appreciation for Japan’s efforts in providing assistance and that he shared similar concerns regarding the Israeli-Palestinian issue.

He explained the latest situation on the ground as well as Jordan’s diplomatic efforts and humanitarian response with regard to the current situation.

The two ministers confirmed that the two countries will continue to work together in order to improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and calm down the situation as soon as possible.

In addition, the two Ministers confirmed and welcomed that their frequent meetings have deepened their cooperative relations.
