TOKYO: Japan on January 11 welcomed the adoption of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution 2722 which condemns the Houthis’ attacks on vessels in the Red Sea and demands that the Houthis immediately cease all such attacks and immediately release the Galaxy Leader, a vessel operated by a Japanese company, and its crew.

The resolution was co-sponsored by Japan and the United States.

“We cannot tolerate any actions that impede the free and safe navigation of vessels, including the seizure of a Japan-related vessel by the Houthis, and we firmly condemn such actions,” an official statement by the Foreign Ministry said. “Japan urges strongly all parties to act in good faith in accordance with the UNSC resolution 2722.”
