TOKYO: Godzilla has returned and is once again attacking downtown Tokyo thanks to an event created by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG).

The city government has decided to produce a projection-mapping display on the iconic Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building throughout the year, using the building as a canvas to display art with light and sound and create a new tourism attraction.

As part of this project, from April 27 TMG will start displaying content featuring “Godzilla,” the sea-born monster that has been attacking Tokyo for decades. This year marks the 70th anniversary of Godzilla’s birth.

TMG says this will be the third attack on Shinjuku – the location of the TMG Building – since the 1991 film “Godzilla vs. King Ghidora,” when mass panic struck Tokyo and Godzilla destroyed the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. TMG says it has developed a “Godzilla Counterattack Weapon,” which it hopes will be powerful enough to defend the government’s building.

Godzilla will rise to his full height of 100 meters via the world’s largest projection mapping display system and the 243-meter TMG Building. This, TMG claims, means Godzilla will be “life size.”

Godzilla debuted in the eponymous 1954 film and has been a character in 33 Japanese films, five American films, and video games, novels, comic books, and television shows.

Godzilla is a prehistoric reptilian monster that was awakened after many years by nuclear radiation.
