TOKYO: North Korea on Sunday condemned the United States for vetoing full UN membership for Palestine, which is currently a non-member observer at the UN. An application to become a full UN member needs to be approved by the Security Council and then at least two-thirds of the General Assembly.

“The United States made a ridiculous excuse at the United Nations Security Council that Palestine’s accession to the United Nations can only be realized through direct negotiations with Israel,” a spokesperson for North Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

“The reality is that the United States is pursuing a ‘one Jewish state policy’ rather than a two-state solution and is complicit with Israel, which is trying to exterminate the Palestinian people. The United States can never escape its responsibility for driving innocent Palestinians to death and despair.”

“The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea shows full support and solidarity in seeking justice for the Palestinian people, who want to end the illegal occupation by Israel and build an independent state. We will actively join the efforts of the international community to achieve it.”

The spokesperson pointed out that the resolution granting Palestine the same qualifications and rights as other UN member states received overwhelming support and is fully supported by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

“The legal rights of Palestinians are being cruelly overrun by the power and tyranny of the United States,” the spokesperson stated. “The international community cannot help but express anger at the extreme Yankee-style arrogance of the United States.”
