Energy group says Japan must look for alternative energy sources

At the 15th IEEJ Webinar for the World, the Institute looked at “Risk Scenarios of Energy Security” and stated that “the worsening of Iran-Israel relations and the situation in Palestine could affect energy supplies from the Persian Gulf and the impact of these developments would be very significant.” (IEEJ)

TOKYO: In its outlook for 2025, the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ) believes that with Japan’s dependence on Middle East crude oil increasing, “the geopolitical risks in the region and escalation of conflicts involving Israel are becoming even more serious for Japan.”

At the 15th IEEJ Webinar for the World, the Institute looked at “Risk Scenarios of Energy Security” and stated that “the worsening of Iran-Israel relations and the situation in Palestine could affect energy supplies from the Persian Gulf and the impact of these developments would be very significant.”

“Our key concern is the conflict between Israel and Iran,” moderator YAMASHITA Yukari said. “If such direct conflict becomes intensified, there will be concern about the impact on energy supplies, particularly the supply of crude oil from the Gulf region. If oil facilities are attacked, that will affect supply, and the crude oil price will also increase substantially.”

The panel said it was important to ensure a stable supply of electricity, as demand is rising. It concluded that there was little choice in the short- to mid-term other than to rely on fossil-fuel power generation, but the development of alternative energy sources was important, and for Japan that would likely mean nuclear or geothermal alternatives.
