TOKYO: Russia will target Japan’s nuclear power plants in the event of a war, UK newspaper the Financial Times has reported.

The newspaper said Russia had prepared a list of 160 targets in both Japan and South Korea in the event a war breaks out with the West.

The list was kept in secret documents distributed by the Russian military and includes 82 military facilities in Japan and South Korea, 13 power plants such as the Tokai Nuclear Power Plant, and civilian infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and oil refineries.

Although the target list was drawn up more than 10 years ago, the Financial Times said the plan is still valid.

It was reported that Russian bombers flew around Japan and South Korea for 17 hours in 2014 to gauge Japan and South Korea’s defensive capabilities.

Russia is believed to be concerned that if a war breaks out with countries belonging to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Russia’s far east could be vulnerable to attacks from NATO allies in the region, as well as US forces based in countries such as Japan and South Korea.
