TOKYO: Japanese Foreign Minister IWAYA Takeshi says Japan has been in contact with the new government in Syria and is hoping that “a peaceful and stable transition of power will take place.”
Iwaya was asked by Arab News Japan about developments on sanctions and diplomatic relations with Syria and replied, “We will make an appropriate decision on these sanctions while keeping a close eye on the discussions in the international community, including the Security Council’s Committee on Terrorism Sanctions.”
“The Japanese government has been in contact with officials of the current so-called interim government. I hope that all parties involved will play a constructive role toward a direct political solution through dialogue by the Syrian people. Above all, we hope to create a better situation for the people of Syria.”
He said Japan is monitoring developments in Syria “with great interest” and would make appropriate decisions, including the lifting of sanctions, while working with the international community.
The Japanese Foreign Minister added: “We also have done things such as freeze the assets of organizations and individuals, including the Shahram Liberation Organization, in accordance with the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act and other laws. In addition, measures based on the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Control Law have also been implemented regarding parties related to the Assad regime in Syria.”
When asked about restoring Ambassador-level diplomatic relations, Iwaya said it was too early to decide, and he couldn’t give an answer as to what might happen in the future.
