TOKYO: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe declared Monday the full end of the country's state of emergency over the COVID-19 epidemic.
"We managed to contain the epidemic only in a month and a half by Japan's original way," Abe told a press conference.
The state of emergency was initially declared for Tokyo and six other prefectures in early April and later expanded to cover all 47 prefectures. Earlier this month, it was lifted for 39 prefectures and then three more.
The government will now lift the emergency for the remaining five prefectures--Tokyo and the neighboring prefectures of Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa, as well as the northern prefecture of Hokkaido.
"We will restore everyday social and economic activities under new ways," Abe said.
