The Defense Ministry said Saturday that a foreign submarine headed west underwater in a contiguous zone northeast of the southwestern Japanese island of Amami Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture, was spotted on Thursday afternoon.

Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyers and patrol aircraft are monitoring the submarine, which was traveling west, outside a contiguous zone west of the prefecture's Yokoate Island on Saturday morning, according to the ministry.

Defense Minister Taro Kono issued instructions to make every possible effort to collect information and conduct vigilance and surveillance, with a sense of tension.

The activities involved P-3C patrol aircraft mainly of the Naha base in the southernmost prefecture of Okinawa and destroyers of the Sasebo base in the southwestern prefecture of Nagasaki and the Kure base in the western prefecture of Hiroshima.
