Japan’s total COVID-19 cases nearly reach 40,000

TOKYO: The total number of coronavirus cases confirmed in Japan rose close to 40,000 as of 10 a.m. Monday (1 a.m. GMT).

The number rose by 8,597 from a week earlier to 39,983. The death toll grew by 16 to 1,027.

The total COVID-19 infections include 712 cases on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, quarantined off Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, south of Tokyo, and 149 cases on the Costa Atlantica cruise ship, which was hit by an outbreak when it was berthed in the southwestern city of Nagasaki.

The total also includes 15 cases in people who were sent back to Japan on government-chartered flights.

By prefecture, total cases were highest in Tokyo, at 13,455, up 2,241, followed by Osaka, at 4,446, up 1,258, and Kanagawa, at 2,612, up 373.
