TOKYO: Japan will send a team of officials to investigate the cause of an oil spill that is threatening the ecosystem of Mauritius, transport minister Kazuyoshi Akaba said Friday.
The five-member team, headed by former Japan Coast Guard Commandant Yuji Sato, will leave for Mauritius on Sunday for an investigation that will last about two weeks.
The team will inspect a cargo ship that spilled about 1,000 tons of fuel oil after running aground off the Indian Ocean island country on July 25.
It will also interview crew members of the Panamanian-flagged ship before drawing up a report through cooperation with authorities in Mauritius and Panama.
The bulk carrier Wakashio, owned by Nagashiki Shipping Co., based in Okayama Prefecture, western Japan, was chartered by Japanese shipping firm Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd.
