TOKYO: Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures in north-eastern Japan were shaken around 17:29 on Wednesday by an earthquake with a maximum seismic intensity of 4, Japan’s meteorological agency reported.
The epicenter was off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture at a depth of about 60 kms. The magnitude of the earthquake was estimated to be 5.3. The agency said there was no danger of a tsunami.
The agency said that its early warning system was not triggered as the seismic intensity was below 5.
A powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck the same area one month ago, leaving at least 100 people injured across six prefectures.
The quake, which measured a strong 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale – the second-highest level – jolted Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures.
The earthquake was the strongest to hit the region since 2011 when a massive 9.0 quake caused a tsunami that devastated much of the region.
Japan marked the 10th anniversary of that quake on March 11.
