TOKYO: A large-scale anti-Olympic demonstration was held around the National Stadium on May 9 with calls to “Stop the Games Immediately”.

At the time, a track and field test event was being held inside the stadium. Protestors held banners saying, “Olympics Kill the poor.” They denounced “forcing schoolchildren to attend it.”

Anti-Olympic groups gathered in front of the “Japan Sports Olympic Square” where the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) and Olympic sports groups are located.

Police officers and security staff were dispatched to the scene but the demonstration ended peacefully.

A number of speeches were made through loudspeakers with many reminding those watching how the COVID-19 infection rate is rising rapidly. Protesters also pointed out that Japan doesn’t have medical facilities or staff to cope with any further rise in infections and medical staff cannot be spared for the Olympic Games.

Various polls have shown a majority of Japanese citizens are against hosting the Games this year.

Prime Minster Yoshihide Suga is determined to host Games but he is being heavily criticized both in regular media and social media.

The head of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan said in a speech  at the Parliament today that Tokyo Olympics can’t be held safely this summer even without spectators from overseas.
