TOKYO: Japan strongly condemned on Thursday the detention of the interim President of Mali, the interim Prime Minister and other members of the interim Government of Mali by a group of Malian army soldiers and called on for their immediate release.

The foreign ministry in Tokyo said Japan “is concerned about the destabilization of the political situation in Mali following and calls for the immediate, safe and unconditional release of all those detained.”

The ministry also called for a prompt resumption of the transition which had been in process since the formation of the interim Government last year, echoing the joint statement of the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the United Nations, among others.
