TOKYO: The city of Musashino in Tokyo has submitted a request to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to cancel the outdoor screening of Olympic events in Inokashira Park.

The official request is posted online on the city’s website.

The park is famous with tourists and locals alike when the cherry blossoms bloom in spring. It also has a boating lake and a zoo.

On Sunday, a group of around 100 citizens living in the area demonstrated near where the installation of a giant screen has been planned. The screen is scheduled to show live Olympic events. Locals fear a large gathering of people in the park could act as a spreading event for COVID-19.

One of Tokyo’s largest public parks, Yoyogi, was recently the subject of a similar protest. A petition alleged that during public screenings, 35,000 people might congregate in the park every day and could lead to the spread of COVID-19.
