Tokyo city is seeking to become a “zero emission” city by aiming to limit the rise in the average global temperature to 1.5°C and setting a goal of net zero CO2 emissions by 2050, announced the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

Due to the “huge tropical cyclones and wildfires around the world,” as well as the tremendous damage done in Japan due to landslides caused by heavy rain in recent years, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is taking action by implementing “concrete policies and effective measures,” and declaring that it “will continue to stand against this global climate crisis.”

Tokyo announced that it will take responsibility as a global megacity that contributes to the world’s net zero emissions.

The government also said it wanted to “strengthen efforts in all fields, such as sustainable management of materials including plastics and measures for the automotive environment, in addition to measures to expand energy efficiency and renewable energy.”

The strategy will be organized into six areas and fourteen policies, including the energy sector, the urban infrastructure sector, and the resource/industrial sector.

Seventeen main targets are set to be achieved by 2030, announced the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
