TOKYO: Around 100 protesters gathered outside the National Olympic Stadium during the Games’ opening ceremony.

Students from Hiroshima, Okinawa, Nagano, Kyoto and Tokyo gathered  faced by hundreds of Tokyo riot police.

According to several witnesses, a young man of around 25, a member of the Zengakuren student group, a left wing radical group, was arrested by police after inadvertently knocking over a photographer’s tripod.  Later, another youth was about to be arrested when fellow students rescued him and prevented his arrest.  However another youth was injured in the resulting stampede.

With their shouted slogans, Students, many wearing helmets and sun glasses, denounced Olympic Games being held in front of a select restricted audience, while students and others have been facing serious economic difficulties since the start of the COVID-19 crisis.

Others spoke of the situation in overworked hospitals due to the pandemic calling for an end to the Games and instead working for a better society in the future.  And in front of the stadium, within view of the fireworks for the Opening  Ceremony, some student protesters gathered to demand the release of their arrested comrade.
