TOKYO: Japan’s Ryo Kiyuna won a gold medal in the men’s karate kata competition, a demonstration of form, in the Tokyo Olympic Games on Friday, in the sport’s Olympic debut.

In wrestling, Japan’s Mayu Mukaida clinched gold in the women’s 53-kilogram division.

Among Japanese wrestlers, Takuto Otoguro advanced to the final of the men’s freestyle 65 kg competition, while Yui Susaki reached the women’s 50 kg final.

The Japanese women’s basketball team beat France 87-71 to earn a spot in the gold medal game with the United States on Sunday.

In the men’s table tennis team event, Japan beat South Korea to win a bronze medal.

The Japanese men’s soccer team lost to Mexico 3-1 in the bronze medal game, failing in its bid for the first Olympic medal for Japan in the sport in 53 years.

In sport climbing, which also made its Olympic debut in the Tokyo Games, Japanese climbers Miho Nonaka and Akiyo Noguchi won silver and bronze, respectively, in the women’s combined event.

In the men’s 50-kilometer race walk held in the northern Japan city of Sapporo, Japan’s Masatora Kawano placed sixth. Fellow Japanese runner Nanako Fujii finished 13th in the women’s 20-km race walk.
