TOKYO: The Japan Coast Guard (JCG) and The Nippon Foundation co-hosted the Coast Guard Global Summit (CGGS), 2nd Working Level Meeting, in a virtual summit from Nov. 16 to 18.

The meeting involved Coast Guards from all over the world, with participants from 88 countries.

The summit covered pioneer activities, coast guard global human resources development, information sharing methods, maritime domain awareness, countermeasures for COVID-19 and diversity in the maritime industry.

Mitsuyuki Uno, the Executive Director of the Nippon Foundation, stated, “faced with emerging ocean challenges such as increased natural disasters from climate change and technological advances such as unmanned autonomous vessels, the world’s coast guards will be forced to redefine their traditional roles and coordinate more with other stakeholders of the ocean community. It is my hope that the Coast Guard Global Summit will serve as a working platform to pioneer solutions to these emerging challenges and enable the world’s coast guards to play an even greater role in keeping our oceans safe and sustainable for future generations.”

Those who attended also decided to hold the 3rd CGGS in Tokyo next year.
