TOKYO: OKADA Katsuya, the Secretary General of Japan’s Constitutional Democratic Party, said any support for Israel’s actions in Gaza should not be “unconditional.”

“The question is whether everything Israel does complies with international law,” the former Deputy Prime Minister said in response to a question from Arab News Japan. “In this regard, I believe that, rather than unilaterally defending Israel, the feelings and considerations of the Palestinian people, who are suffering greatly, should be emphasized more.”

“Of course, what Hamas has done is unforgivable. However, the G7 foreign ministers’ statement stressed Israel’s right to protect itself and its people in accordance with international law as Israel seeks to prevent a recurrence,” he said on Nov. 9 at his party headquarters.

The Japanese government has a similar policy.
