TOKYO: Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi on Tuesday announced that Japan will donate a further 700,000 shots of the vaccine to Iran via the COVAX program.

“With this additional supply, the total number of vaccine provision will be 3.6 million shots,” Hayashi stated. “With this supply, the total number of vaccines supplied overseas will be 36 million shots to 23 countries and regions since the start of the supply in June this year.”

Next year, Hayashi added, the government will up the volume of donations to 60 million shots.

Japan has donated over 30 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, most of which are Astra Zeneca.

The health authorities authorized the use of the Astra Zeneca vaccine for use in Japan, but most data shows Japanese are preferring to stick with the Pfizer and Moderna alternatives.
