DUBAI: The government of Japan has extended approximately ¥974 million Japanese yen ($8.45 million USD) as an emergency grant assistance to vulnerable people including refugees and children in crisis at a time when approaching harsh winter in Lebanon amplifies their sufferings.

The humanitarian assistance includes provision of winter clothes, house repairing kit, food, safe water as well as improvement of health and hygienic conditions.

The aid will be implemented through organizations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

According to the Japanese embassy in Lebanon, approximately 18,000 people will get food, 297,800 people, including refugees, will get shelter and protection assistance and 35,000 children and families will get healthcare services, clean water, blankets and winter clothes.

Another 25,000 people will get fuel for heating. The Japanese government stated it is fully aware of the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon as they face harsh winter conditions.

Japan has decided to strengthen its interventions to alleviate their sufferings and hopes the people of Lebanon receive its message through the assistance that “the international community will be there with you at all times.”

Japan stated it remains committed to supporting the most vulnerable segment of society under the deteriorating humanitarian situation in cooperation with the international community as a friend in need.
