Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Saturday that his government has urged Japanese nationals to leave Ukraine because international tensions have heightened over the country and the local situation is unpredictable.

Japan’s Foreign Ministry said Friday it has raised its travel warning for Ukraine to Level 4, the highest on its alert scale, urging Japanese nationals to leave the country immediately.

The evacuation advisory came after Russia assembled troops near its borders with Ukraine.

The government keeps a close watch on the Ukrainian situation with serious concerns, Kishida told reporters.

Noting the importance of cooperation with other Group of Seven countries, Kishida said Japan will respond appropriately to changes in the situation.
