Naha, Okinawa

Four Chinese coastal guard ships sailed in Japanese territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture, southernmost Japan, for about one and a half hours on Wednesday.

It was the first such intrusion into Japanese waters by Chinese government ships since Nov. 8 and the 30th this year.

The four ships entered Japanese waters southeast of the island of Kuba in the Senkaku chain between around 10:15 a.m. (1:15 a.m. GMT) and 10:35 a.m., according to the Japan Coast Guard's 11th regional headquarters in the prefectural capital of Naha.

The Chinese vessels left Japanese waters east-northeast of the same island between around 11:45 a.m. and noon. China claims the Japanese-administered islands, which it calls Diaoyu.
