TOKYO: Visiting Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Friday showed understanding over Japan's plan to deploy Self-Defense Forces personnel to the Middle East.

At a meeting in Tokyo, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe explained to Rouhani the SDF deployment plan for maritime safety in the region, which will be adopted at a cabinet meeting Dec. 27.

Tehran understands Japan's intention of contributing to efforts to ensure navigational safety and appreciates its attitude of explaining the deployment plan with transparency, Rouhani said.

Abe expressed his concern over Iran's suspension of its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, in reaction to US economic sanctions.

"I hope Iran will fully implement the nuclear deal and play a constructive role for peace and stability in the region," Abe told Rouhani.

In response, Rouhani blasted the United States' withdrawal from the nuclear deal, describing the move as one-sided and unreasonable.

He also asked for Japanese assistance to Iran's initiative for the safety of vessels in the region.

Rouhani is the first Iranian leader to visit Japan since the October 2000 trip by then President Mohammad Khatami. Rouhani's visit followed a proposal from Iran made after Abe's trip to the Middle East country in June this year.

Abe and Rouhani held talks for the first time since September, when their discussions took place on the sidelines of a UN General Assembly session in New York.

Rouhani's trip to Japan is considered part of Iranian efforts to end its international isolation.
