TOKYO: The Japanese government has announced a decision to temporarily close its embassy in Baghdad amid elevated tensions between the United States and Iran.

In the announcement on Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry said that there remain contingency risks for the time being as tensions are growing in the region.

The Japanese embassy's services will be offered at a consular office in the northern Iraq city of Erbil, according to the ministry.

The ministry also raised its safety alert for Japanese nationals in Iraq to Level 4, advising them to evacuate from the Middle Eastern country.
