Cairo: Japanese Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, at a meeting in Cairo on Sunday, affirmed the importance of universal values, such as maintaining the international order based on the rule of law, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The two leaders also confirmed close Japan-Egypt cooperation in helping calm the situation in Sudan and helping the conflict-hit African country’s transition to civilian rule. In Sudan, government forces and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group continue fighting.

Kishida is visiting Egypt on the first leg of his five-nation tour, which will also take him to Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique and Singapore.

It is the first time for a Japanese prime minister to visit Egypt since January 2015, when the late Shinzo Abe paid a visit.
