TOKYO: Japan on Friday said it would extend Emergency Grant Aid of $5 million for humanitarian assistance in the Sudan.

The aid will be passed via international organizations to be used for food, health and medical care, and other requirements.

Japan is granting the aid in response to the further deterioration of the humanitarian situation caused by the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April, as well as the lack of improvement in the security situation.

In addition to this assistance, Grant Aid of approximately $1.46 million will be donated through Japanese NGOs via the Japan Platform (JPF) in the Sudan and Chad.

The humanitarian assistance was awarded after Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio said he would work closely together on a response to the situation in the Sudan during his visit to Africa in May. This was in addition to G7 leaders confirming their commitment to support Sudan at the G7 Hiroshima Summit.

Japan says it will continue in its efforts to work for an early ceasefire between the two parties, as well as assisting in humanitarian needs in the Sudan.
