Taking a path of appeasement with the Iranian regime would never work, Saudi Arabia has told the Middle East’s premier security summit.

The diplomatic approach of making concessions failed to halt German leader Adolf Hitler’s aggressive policies and the same applied to Iran, the Kingdom’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir warned.

Addressing a plenary session at the 15th International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Manama Dialogue, in Bahrain, the minister said that Tehran had to make up its mind whether it wanted to be a revolution or a nation state.

Al-Jubeir added that the region was dealing with two competing visions: One of light and the other of darkness.

He told delegates that having a dialogue with Iran was not the question. “The question is, is Iran willing to abandon the principle of exporting its revolution which is enshrined in its constitution? Is Iran willing to accept this principle of the sovereignty of nations?”

He noted that the principle of international relations, since the treaties of Westphalia in the 1600s (which largely ended the European wars of religion), was based on sovereignty of nations and a rules-based international system.

“We cannot have it be ripped apart by revisionist states such as Germany under Hitler, the Soviet Union under the Communists, or Iran today,” he said, adding that if Iran chose to continue along its destructive path, sanctions would be increased, not reduced.

“We have had more than 110 countries condemn the Iranian attack against the (oil) facilities in Saudi Arabia. That is a very clear message to the Iranian regime that the world will not accept this,” Al-Jubeir added.
