Saudi-Japanese bilateral ties have always been an example of a strong, friendly relationship despite all the political and economic turmoil. This is undoubtedly due to the belief in a common destiny and deep-rooted friendship that bind us.

One of the historical figures who strongly assumed this belief is former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, whom we lost today in an unfortunate incident that was painful for all of us. Abe was a loyal friend who succeeded in concluding many economic, commercial, investment and cultural partnerships between Japan and Saudi Arabia, as well as a partner in the Saudi-Japanese Vision 2030, which gave strong momentum to our solid friendship.

We can never forget the historic visit he paid to the Kingdom in January 2020, when he met the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. That visit strengthened the partnership between the two friendly countries, and brought common visions closer regarding many bilateral and international issues.

We are thus deeply aware of the magnitude of the loss suffered by the Japanese people after losing a man who was loyal to his country and Japan’s friends around the world. With his famous patriotic stances, Abe greatly contributed to establishing the image of modern Japan.

We offer our deepest condolences to the Japanese people and the Abe family.
