Japan’s Canon Inc said on Tuesday that in response to the devastating earthquakes in Turkiye and Syria, it would donate €100,000 or ¥14,261,505 through the Japanese Red Cross society, the Turkish Crescent movement and other relief organizations.

Canon Medical Systems Europe B.V. will also provide free medical equipment to help meet the medical needs of victims.

“On February 6, 2023, a large-scale earthquake caused extensive damage and loss of life in the Republic of Turkey and the Syrian Arab Republic. We at Canon would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to all those affected by this disaster and our thoughts go out to those suffering in its aftermath,” the company’s sustainability account said in a post on Instagram. “To aid in the relief efforts for the victims, the Canon Group has announced that it will make a donation of 100,000 euros (approximately US$ 106,334) via the Japanese Red Cross Society, the Turkish Red Crescent movement and other relief organizations.”

More than 35,000 people were killed when the quake devastated swathes of Turkiye and neighboring Syria on February 6, at least 3,600 of them in Syria, according to government officials and emergency services in rebel areas.

While aid agencies and governments have stepped up efforts to get help to earthquake-devastated parts of Turkiye and Syria, many were still left homeless and struggling to meet basic needs, like finding shelter from the bitter cold.
