TOKYO: Oriental Land Co. said Friday that it will extend the closure of its Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea theme parks further in line with the extension of the government's declaration of a state of emergency over the coronavirus pandemic.

The company previously said it would decide when to reopen the Disney parks in the city of Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, around the middle of this month.

But Oriental Land now plans to make the decision soon after the central government and relevant local authorities lift their business suspension requests related to the pandemic, company officials said.

The theme parks were shut on Feb. 29, and the closure was extended repeatedly as the coronavirus outbreak continued.

Oriental Land also said that it will put some 5,400 employees on temporary leave from May 18 until the parks are reopened.
