TOKYO: A fairly strong earthquake with a maximum seismic intensity of 4 struck in the deep waters near Japan’s southern Kagoshima Prefecture two minutes after midnight on Monday, September 11.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter was near the Tokara Islands in the Pacific Ocean, at a depth of approximately 30 km.

The Agency estimated the magnitude to be 5.3. It said there is no need to worry about a tsunami from this earthquake.

The seismic intensity of 4 and 3 was observed in several villages including Toshima in Kagoshima Prefecture, but no damage accounts have been reported.

As Toshima area has been experiencing a series of earthquakes this month, the Agency alerted people there to be vigilant that strong shakings might occur in the upcoming days.
