TOKYO: Japan says it welcomes the report on the perpetrators of the use of chemical weapons in Syria by the Investigation and Identification Team (IIT) of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), which was released on Feb. 22.

A statement from Foreign Ministry Press Secretary KOBAYASHI Maki said Japan supports the work of the OPCW and IIT from the standpoint that the use of chemical weapons is impermissible under any circumstances. It said those who use chemical weapons should be identified and held accountable.

The statement added: “In order to prevent the recurrence of the use of chemical weapons in Syria and other countries, Japan continues to fully support efforts of the OPCW, and to work closely with the international community toward the settlement of the Syrian crisis.”
