Tokyo stores to shut, amusement parks to remain closed this weekend

TOKYO: Many service businesses in the Tokyo metropolitan area, such as department stores and amusement parks, decided Friday not to operate this weekend, following stay-at-home requests by the metropolitan and other local governments to prevent the spread of the coronavirus outbreak.

Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores Co., under the wing of J. Front Retailing Co., said it will shutter two stores in Tokyo on Sunday.

Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd. decided to shorten business hours at six department stores in Tokyo and Saitama Prefecture on Saturday and Sunday, after implementing the reduced hours at the stores on weekdays.

Commercial facility operator Lumine Co. is going to fully close seven of its 14 outlets in Tokyo and Kanagawa and Saitama prefectures this weekend, with the remaining stores having food sections only available.

Clothing store chain Fast Retailing will shut 39 Uniqlo casual wear outlets in Tokyo and the two neighboring prefectures. Some other Uniqlo stores will shut at 6 p.m.

Oriental Land Co. announced that its Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea theme parks will continue to be closed at least until April 20. The company previously planned to reopen them early next month. In addition, Disney hotels will halt operations from April 1 for an unspecified period.

Yomiuri Land Co. will shutter ifs amusement park in Tokyo from Saturday through April 5, after reopening it only recently.

In the food service industry, Starbucks Coffee Japan Ltd. will close most of its about 550 outlets in Tokyo, Kanagawa and Saitama over the weekend. From Monday, it plans to resume operations with reduced seating and bigger distances between seats.

Meanwhile, Skylark Holdings Co. will have a total of 726 "Gust" and other restaurants that are open until late at night close their doors at midnight on Saturday and Sunday.

Supermarkets and convenience stores providing daily necessities will stay open in principle.

Aeon Co. will continue services at its general merchandise and food stores as usual, although specialized stores at its Aeon shopping malls will be closed for the two days of this weekend.

Ito-Yokado Co. will keep stores open while continuing shortened-hour operations at some outlets.

There are no changes in operating hours at convenience stores of Seven-Eleven Japan Co., Lawson Inc. and FamilyMart Co., except for some outlets.
