TOKYO: The Lebanese Embassy in Tokyo released a statement on Wednesday announcing that the Japanese Red Cross Society is collecting relief money to support the people affected by the massive explosion at a port facility in Beirut, which occurred last week.

The letter, which was addressed to the media and friends of Lebanon in Japan, explained that the explosion led to the death of over 220 people, injuries of over 6,000, the displacement of over 300,000 and damages of over 40,000 buildings in Lebanon.

The embassy also stated that families in Lebanon are lacking basic necessities such as shelter, food and proper medical care. The letter urged generosity and support to those in the Middle Eastern country facing critical conditions.

The name of the fund is the Middle East Humanitarian Crisis Relief Fund and donations will be accepted from Aug. 7 to September 30. Donations can be made at Japan Post Bank and other major banks, including Mitsubishi UFJ Bank and Mizuho Bank.

Those looking for more details can contact the Japanese Red Cross Society’s PR division.

International emergency relief for people affected by disasters and conflict is one of the main activities of the Japanese Red Cross Society, which was founded in 1877 and is a member of the International Red Cross.
