TOKYO: Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary SUGA Yoshihide announced on Wednesday his decision to run in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s election to pick its next president, set for Sept. 14.

The announcement by Suga, 71, came after LDP Policy Research Council Chairman KISHIDA Fumio and former LDP Secretary-General ISHIBA Shigeru, both 63, declared their candidacies in the race on Tuesday.

The election is for effectively choosing the country’s next prime minister to succeed ABE Shinzo, who resigned due to health reasons.
