Seoul: Japan, the United States and South Korea have agreed to launch a high-level cyber consultation group, the South Korean presidential office said Monday.

The group will meet every three months to discuss ways to counter North Korea’s cyber activities, which could be used as a source of funds for its development of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction.

The launch of the consultation group is designed to reinforce the three countries’ capability to counter the threat of cyberattacks, the South Korean presidential office said.

Senior officials from the three countries met in Washington Tuesday and agreed to launch the consultation group, according to the South Korea presidential office.

Japan was represented at Tuesday’s meeting by Keiichi Ichikawa, assistant chief cabinet secretary and deputy head of the National Security Secretariat.

At their Camp David summit in August, the leaders of Japan, the United States and South Korea agreed to set up a working group to prevent North Korea’s cyberattacks.
