PM Suga may not be able to rely on ‘golf diplomacy’ if Trump re-elected

TOKYO: With a new prime minister in Japan and the US quickly approaching its November election, questions have arisen about how Japan’s relationship with the US may be affected under new leadership.

The issue of Prime Minister Suga’s diplomatic experience was put to Japanese Administrative Reform Minister Taro Kono at Japan’s annual G1 Global Conference on Sunday. Prior to becoming prime minister, Suga served as chief cabinet secretary – a role that had him dealing more with internal issues than foreign affairs.

Kono, who was serving as the foreign affairs minister prior to his new appointment, said he had given Suga and former Prime Minister ABE Shinzo regular briefings so that they were well-informed on what was going on in the world.

But he joked that unlike Abe, Suga does not play golf. Abe had used his golf skills to boost his personal ties with Trump and was admired by many in Japan for his favorable relationship with the American president.

“I don’t think he can do the golf diplomacy with President Trump as well as Abe, he will have to find another way,” remarked Kono, who frequently shows a sense of humor in public.

Although Trump’s reelection appears to be an uphill battle based on polls, American presidential candidate Joe Biden is also known to enjoy a game of golf.
