Egypt has removed import restrictions on Japanese food products that were introduced during the wake of the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident, the Japanese farm ministry said Wednesday.
The move on Monday enabled food products from all of Japan’s 47 prefectures to be shipped to the Middle Eastern country without radiation testing certificates and certificates of origin.
In 2019, Japan’s exports of food products to Egypt, mainly mackerel, totaled 3 billion yen.
Fifty-four countries and regions imposed restrictions on food imports from Japan after the triple reactor meltdown at Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.’s Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant.
The decision by Egypt reduced the number of countries and regions with the restrictions in place to 18.
