TOKYO: Top national security officials of Japan, the United States and South Korea reaffirmed on Friday their cooperation over issues related to North Korea.
In a videoconference, Shigeru Kitamura, head of the secretariat for Japan’s National Security Council, White House national security adviser Robert O’Brien and South Korean national security adviser Suh Hoon analyzed information on the North Korean situation.
The three-way video meeting took place ahead of important events, including a convention in January 2021 of the Workers’ Party of Korea, the ruling party of North Korea.
The three officials reconfirmed that their countries will work together for having North Korea dismantle all of its nuclear weapons and missiles in a complete, verifiable and irreversible way.
Kitamura secured cooperation from the US and South Korean officials for the early resolution of North Korea’s abductions of Japanese nationals decades ago.
The national security leaders of Japan, the United States and South Korea held talks for the first time since a meeting in Washington in January.
