SAO PAULO: Japan, the United States and Brazil on Tuesday agreed to enhance business ties and their cooperation in policy coordination to address regional situations.

Officials from the three governments held their first meeting under a new framework for trilateral dialogue held in Brasilia, Brazil’s capital. From Japan, Teiji Hayashi, director-general of the Foreign Ministry’s Latin American and Caribbean Affairs Bureau attended the meeting.

It is the first time for the three countries to form a framework for dialogue on political and economic matters.

The three nations “will bolster existing cooperation to strengthen business environments, expand foreign investments, promote regional connectivity, support sustainable development and economic growth, and enhance cybersecurity,” according to a joint statement adopted at the meeting.

They also affirmed their commitment “to develop a common approach to the deployment of transparent and secure 5G networks based on the foundation of free and fair competition, transparency, and the rule of law.”

Washington is becoming increasingly vigilant against China’s growing presence in Latin America.

The reference to the field of fifth-generation ultrahigh-speed communications, where China’s Huawei Technologies Co. has the upper hand, is viewed as an attempt to counter China’s movements.
