Sony Corp. said Tuesday it has started offering a tablet app that predicts taxi demand from 10 minutes to 12 hours ahead using artificial intelligence technology.

The app will show areas and driving routes where strong demand is projected, based on information such as driving data and weather conditions, the Japanese company said.

It will be provided through Minnano Taxi Corp., a joint taxi-hailing company set up mainly by Sony and five taxi operators in Tokyo.

Daiwa Motor Transportation Co., one of the taxi operators, will be the first company to introduce the app, using it at some 630 cabs.

Sony also said it plans to test-drive vehicles mounted with its sensors in the capital to gather driving information as part of efforts to develop safety assistance tools for taxi drivers.
