‘No tsunami impact on Japan’ by New Zealand earthquake: JMA

TOKYO: The 7.3 magnitude earthquake that hit the east coast of North Island of New Zealand tonight (around 10:27 pm on the 4th of March Japan time) may cause a tsunami near its epicenter, but it has no effect on Japan, Japan Meteorological Agency reported.

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii reported there was a major earthquake of magnitude 7.3 with an epicenter east of the North Island of New Zealand with risk of tsunami up to 1m along the New Zealand coast calling for attention. Upper East Coast residents were told to evacuate “immediately”, according to local reports.

The epicenter is estimated to be approximately at 178 km northeast of Gisborne on the North Island of New Zealand, and at the depth of 10 km.
