TOKYO: An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale and with a seismic intensity of 4 rattled Iwate and Miyagi prefectures in northeast Japan on Sunday.
The epicenter was off Miyagi Prefecture and the depth of the quake was 50 km. Ishinomaki City, which was heavily damaged by the tsunami 10 years ago, was hit the hardest with a seismic intensity of 4.
The earthquake was felt as far south as Tokyo and Shizuoka Prefecture near Mt. Fuji.
“No abnormality” was reported at the Tohoku Electric Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant.
JR East temporarily suspended the central part of the Tohoku-Hokkaido Line for about 10 minutes.
Earlier in the day, another mild earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9 hit the northern part of Hiroshima prefecture at around 5:14 A.M.
The Japan Metrological Agency said that a maximum seismic intensity of 4 was observed in its epicenter at the depth of 10 kilometers under the ground.
The agency said that there is no need to worry about a tsunami caused by the earthquake.
