TOKYO: With 32 days to go before the start of the Olympic Games, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike made a statement regarding measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Speaking at Tokyo City Hall, Gov. Koike confirmed that the Tokyo government may reduce the capacity of fan zones to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Koike said that Olympic facilities open to the public would have their capacity reduced by half, specifically 10,000 spectators.
Koike also said that the situation of the evolution of the pandemic and new variants would be closely monitored and further measures could be enforced at any time, but decisions would be coordinated with the Olympic Committee and the government.
Tokyo Metropolitan Government will issue a guide for spectators to reduce congestion in crowds and will make the wearing of masks mandatory. It will prohibit people from speaking loudly in order to produce a safe and secure environment.
