BERLIN: A task force of the International Atomic Energy Agency kicked off its first meeting on Tuesday in Vienna to review the planned release of treated radioactive water from the disaster-crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant in Japan into the sea.

The team is made up of staff members of the IAEA and experts from the United States, China, South Korea, Britain, France, Russia, Canada, Australia, Vietnam, Argentina and the Marshall Islands.

The task force will hold the three-day meeting to discuss how it will review the water release plan of the Japanese government.

The team will visit the Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.  nuclear plant in the northeastern Japan prefecture of Fukushima in December.

In a statement released Tuesday, the IAEA said that the task force members “will not work in a national capacity but as part of an international team managed by the IAEA.”
