Japan on Tuesday urged Iran not to abandon its commitment to a 2015 nuclear non-proliferation agreement.

In a statement, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi stressed that Tokyo supported the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which by helping to slow the international spread of nuclear weapons had strengthened the stability of the Middle East.

The minister called upon Tehran to continue with its JCPOA undertakings and fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on its nuclear obligations, in the wake of the killing of top Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani in a US drone strike.

Motegi said that Japan was deeply concerned by Iran’s announcement that it would no longer adhere to agreed limits on its enrichment of uranium.

“It is regrettable that Iran made such an announcement despite our persistent diplomatic efforts to strongly urge Iran not to take measures that may undermine the JCPOA. Japan once again strongly urges Iran to comply with the JCPOA, and to immediately return to its commitment under the JCPOA,” he added.

Despite the Iranian stance, Motegi pledged that Japan would continue its diplomatic efforts toward easing tensions and stabilizing the situation in the Middle East in coordination with relevant countries and international organizations.
