TOKYO: Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga on Thursday hailed the so-called Phase One trade agreement that was signed between the United States and China in Washington on Wednesday.

"Japan welcomes the signing as a positive step," Suga told a press conference. "We'll closely monitor developments, including effects on Japan.

"Japan hopes that the United States and China will seek to solve their problems in a constructive manner through dialogue," he added.
