UAE coronavirus cases stay below 1,000, two more COVID-19 related deaths reported

DUBAI: Daily coronavirus infections in the UAE remained below 1,000 for almost a week with 987 new overnight cases confirmed on Sunday, health officials said.

The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) also reported two additional deaths related to the highly infectious disease.

The UAE’s caseload now stands at 716,381 with 2,038 fatalities.

Applications for tourist visas into the country were reopened, including from travelers coming from countries previously banned due to coronavirus safety concerns, on the provision they are fully vaccinated with WHO-approved COVID-19 jabs.

The UAE government’s confidence to re-open borders hinges on its target to achieve mass immunity for the population, where 86.53 percent have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine  while 75.59 percent of individuals have been fully vaccinated.

UAE nationals and residents vaccinated against COVID-19 have also been encouraged to take booster shots six months after receiving their second dose.

The total number of coronavirus vaccine doses provided so far stands at 18,056,765, equivalent to a vaccine distribution rate of of 182.57 doses per 100 people.
